Published in 1644, during the English Civil War, Areopagitica was Milton's passionate argument for Parliament to repeal the Licensing Ordinance of June 14, 1643, which stated that no book was to be published unless it was approved by an authorized officer. He identified censorship with the Papal Inquisition and argued that people should be allowed to decide for themselves whether or not a book is good or evil.
