Song of the Lark, by WiIla Cather, published in 1915, is a story about a young talented girl, Thea Kronborg, growing up in a small town in 1890s Colorado, who becomes a world famous opera singer. Cather clearly understands that a life in art requires the renunciation of attachments that threaten to divert the artist from her pursuit of Beauty, and that such a path brings isolation, loneliness, and sorrow, as well as the satisfaction of artistic achievement and a responsibility to those who encourage and help the artist find her way.
