Sister Carrie is a story of adultery and city life at the turn of the 20th century, and the philosophical ruminations of Dreiser. The novel created a stir due to its depiction of an "immoral" woman who has an affair with a married man, and the book's publisher reluctantly published the book, without promoting its sale. A British edition came out shortly thereafter and was praised by reviewers. Since then, the book's place in literary history is due to its fight in the name of literary freedom rather than for literary greatness.
