The story of how loving someone makes us real features a little boy's beloved brown velveteen rabbit, who is teased by the fancier toys in the nursery. When the boy becomes seriously ill with scarlet fever, the rabbit remains by his side, his constant companion and source of reassurance. After the illness passes, everything that may have been contaminated by the illness is taken outdoors to be burned. But the Fairy of Nursery Magic intervenes and saves the velveteen rabbit from the fire and makes him real.
