In The Republic (better translated as "society" or "the state"), Plato wrestles with the ethical question of whether it is always better to be just than unjust. In the course of the debate, Socrates uses the good city as a metaphor to help define justice as a virtue of a person, and the discussion turns to political questions about the organization of cities, what constitutes a bad regime, and the ideal state. The Republic is one of the most famous and influential of the Socratic dialogues.
