After Oedipus abdicates the throne, his sons, Eteocles and Polynices, engage in a struggle for power. The dispute is settled when the Thebans declare that the brothers are to share the throne, ruling in alternate years. However, when Eteocles' term ends, he refuses to relinquish the throne and banishes his brother. Polynices raises an army and marches on the city to take the throne by force. Messengers bring news to Eteocles of the army and the seven champions who stand ready to lead the attack at each of the city's seven gates. Eteocles and Polynices face each other at the seventh gate and engage in a fight to the death. Because Polynices waged war against his city, he is denied burial.
